The mission of the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology is to regulate the instruction and practice of cosmetology and related professions by establishing rules and regulations relating to qualifications for licensure and procedures for the administration of examination prior to licensure, and by establishment of rules and regulations setting forth sanitation requirements for the operation of cosmetological establishments, for the benefit of the consumer and for the public health.

NOTICE - An oral proceeding has been set in regards to the adoption of the revised and clarified rules for the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology on October 27, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.  You may find a copy of the proposed rule changes on the Mississippi Secretary of State's Website in the Administrative Bulletin at the link Proposed Rule(s) 9.1 & 9.2 .

In accordance with Rule 1.11(B), persons wishing to make oral presentations at a proceeding shall notify the Board at least one (1) business day prior to the proceeding and indicate the general subject of their presentations.  An oral presentation sign-up sheet has been provided. Please note: The last day Pearson VUE will be testing the Mississippi Cosmetology exams will be Wednesday, December 31, 2014. We encourage candidates to schedule as early as possible to test prior to this date. As a reminder, all candidates must present their Board-issued approval letter to sit for an exam.
Please be advised that pending successful contract negotiations, the award will be made to Professional Credential Services, Inc. for an initial contract term of two (2) years.  Continue to visit this website for future updates as they become available.

The Board of Cosmetology, in keeping with an opinion of the MS. State Board of Medical Licensure has issued a position statement that prohibits the use of laser unless the individual is under the supervision of a physician. ​

Any individual who fails to provide I.D. to an agent of the board, during an inspection, when requested, will result in a citation being issued to the owner/manager of a salon (Refer to Rule 111.)​​

State Laws, Rules and Regulations CE for Out of State Instructors | 12/14/2014 1:00 PM

​CE hours provided by the Board for Out of State Instructors who wish to obtain licensure in the State of Mississippi. The five (5) hour seminar will be held at the board office, located at 239 N. Lamar St., Suite 303, Jackson, MS 39201. The hours must have been completed at the time of application. Registration must be received by the board office 2 weeks prior to scheduled date.

What is the processing time for a new or renewed license?
Licenses are mailed 6-8 weeks from the date of qualification. The qualification date for renewals is the date the correct fee, renewal form and passport photo is received in the Board office; for new practitioners it is the date the correct fee, examination results and passport photo are received; for new salons, it is the date the approval was received from the inspector.​
